Abdullah Majid is a native of Jamaica, Queens, New York. He has been imprisoned for more than three decades. In the 1960s, Abdul worked in the Grassroots Advisory Council—an anti-poverty program— before joining the Black Panther Party (BPP), and then became a citizen of the Republic of New Afrika. Abdul was involved in many of the BPP’s community-based survival programs which included free health clinics, free breakfast for children, the fight to decentralize the NYC public schools and NYPD. For this reason, he was targeted by the FBI’s Cointelpro—counterintelligence—program, charged and convicted of murder and the attempted murder of a police officer.
