In the 1960s and 70s, a team of independent alternative journalists known as Videofreex, who initially covered the counterculture beat for CBS News, jumped the mainstream news ship to create the first public access tv station in upstate New York. Videofreex were pioneers in DIY news coverage and some of the first journalists to buck the mainstream corporate news game.
Jon Nealon and Jenny Raskin’s documentary “Here Come The Videofreex” tells their origin story and unpacks the historical context of their impact on news and reporting. One of the most fascinating revelations made during the restoration of Videofreex’s archival footage was a conversation with revolutionary activist and Black Panther Party Illinois chairman Fred Hampton. You can watch some of Hampton’s powerful words about self-defense against government abuse and a trailer for the documentary below. “Here Come The Videofreex” will have a theatrical run atIFC Center in NYC Mar. 9 -Mar. 15 with several a filmmakers and featured subjects Q&As, which you can learn more info about down below, too.
